The best Proton Mail alternative depends on what you want to change. If you pay per person and want everyone and every role address on your domain for one price, LotsMail charges per domain ($5 a month on Starter). If you want a suite, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 price per user. Fastmail and Zoho Mail are per-user email providers, and Migadu and Purelymail charge one flat price per account.

Proton Mail for Business is a strong product, and its edge is privacy: Proton says it uses end-to-end encryption so that no one, including Proton, can access your data on its servers. People look elsewhere for practical reasons. Proton prices per user, so the bill grows with every person you add, and features like email groups and custom workspace branding start on Workspace Standard, not on Mail Essentials.

I opened each provider's own pricing page on 29 October 2026. Prices are US dollars per month before tax, list prices only. Sources are at the end.

## 1. LotsMail: one price per domain, for your whole team

LotsMail is business email on your own domain, priced per domain instead of per person. Starter covers 1 domain at $5 a month or $50 a year, Pro covers 5 domains at $20 a month or $200 a year, and Business covers 20 domains at $60 a month or $600 a year (prices from LotsTech's live pricing catalogue, checked on 29 October 2026). Every plan has unlimited mailboxes, addresses and teammates, and each domain has 10 GB of storage and 1,000 sent emails a month. See [pricing](https://lotsmail.to/pricing) and [pricing explained](https://lotsmail.to/blog/lotsmail-pricing-explained).

For a business owner, that means the bill doesn't move when you hire. Ten people on Proton Mail Essentials cost $69.90 a month on yearly billing. Ten people on LotsMail Starter cost $5.

- **Your own address for everyone.** hello@, orders@, billing@ and each person's name, all on your domain. You keep your DNS provider and your website: add the records LotsMail shows, check them, then point mail to LotsMail when you're ready.
- **Shared inboxes with access per mailbox.** Share support@ with the people who answer it, and choose who can read, who can send and who has full control. Nobody shares a password, and private mailboxes stay private.
- **Restricted mailboxes.** Limit a mailbox to receive only from listed senders and send only to listed recipients, for a contractor or an AI assistant. [How restricted mailboxes work](https://lotsmail.to/blog/restricted-mailboxes-explained).
- **Bring your old mail.** Your current provider keeps your existing mail, and you can copy it into LotsMail with Import mail: Gmail, Google Workspace, Zoho, Yahoo or any host with IMAP, using an app password. Trash, Spam and Drafts are not imported, and the password is deleted when the import ends.
- **Your AI assistant in the inbox.** Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any MCP client and choose, for each mailbox, whether it may read and search, write drafts, or send. Sending is off until you turn it on. There's no built-in AI and no model costs: LotsMail works with the AI agent you already use.
- **If payment lapses,** sending stops at once, incoming mail keeps arriving for 14 days, and stored mail isn't deleted.
- **Start free.** New accounts get free credits when they sign up, no card, enough to run one domain for about a month.

> In LotsMail, read support@ and list the customer emails from the last seven days that still need a reply, oldest first. Draft a reply to each one and leave them in Drafts.

**Where Proton fits better.** Proton's end-to-end encryption is its defining feature. LotsMail's privacy policy describes mail encrypted in transit and encrypted at rest by LotsMail's providers, and doesn't describe end-to-end encryption. Proton also works with Outlook, Thunderbird and Apple Mail today and includes a calendar; LotsMail's mail apps are coming soon, it has no calendar, and it's for normal business email, never newsletters, marketing or cold email. Storage differs too: Proton Essentials gives each person 15 GB, while a LotsMail domain has 10 GB shared by all its mailboxes, with more available as a paid add-on.

Choose LotsMail if you have several people or role addresses on your domain, want one predictable price and shared inboxes, and are happy in a browser inbox.

### For founders and growing teams

Everyone on the company domain without a seat count, role addresses for every function, and an assistant that can sort the inbox and draft replies you approve. That's the same product, and the cost stays flat as you hire.

### For agencies

An agency can run a workspace per client, each with its own domains and mailboxes. Client staff sign in as mailbox users, free and unlimited, with no LotsTech account. On the Business plan, white-label is included on every domain, so webmail and account emails carry the agency's own brand. The domain's MX and DNS records point at LotsMail, and whoever controls a domain's DNS can redirect its mail. Each mailbox shows who can read it, and an agency admin doesn't read client mail unless it's given access to a mailbox. See [business email for agencies](https://lotsmail.to/blog/business-email-for-agencies).

## 2. Fastmail: independent email with calendar, per person

Fastmail's business plans are Basic ($4 a user monthly, $3 on yearly billing), Standard ($6 or $5) and Professional ($10 or $9). Custom domain addresses and third-party app access start on Standard, which has 60 GB per user. Every plan has shared addresses like support@ and shared calendars, with up to 30 days to try it. Fastmail also has an official MCP server, with read, write and send access you can combine; it says attachments aren't supported yet. I compared the two in [LotsMail vs Fastmail](https://lotsmail.to/blog/lotsmail-vs-fastmail).

Choose Fastmail if you want an independent per-person provider with calendar and mail-app support today.

## 3. Zoho Mail: the lowest paid price per user

Zoho Mail Lite is from $1 a user a month on yearly billing, with 5 GB of mail storage a user, and there's no monthly plan for it. The free plan covers custom email for 1 domain and up to 5 users, though IMAP, POP and ActiveSync aren't included on it. Workplace Standard is $3 a user billed annually or $4 monthly, with 30 GB of mail storage a user. Zoho MCP lists Zoho Mail among its apps and works with Claude, GPT and other agents. More in [Zoho Mail alternatives](https://lotsmail.to/blog/zoho-mail-alternatives).

Choose Zoho Mail if your team is small and the lowest price per person matters most.

## 4. Google Workspace: the suite most teams compare against

Business Starter lists at $7 a user a month on the one-year plan, Standard at $14 and Plus at $22, with 30 GB, 2 TB and 5 TB of pooled storage per user. You get Gmail, Meet, Drive and Docs, with Gemini in Gmail. Google shows short introductory discounts on its page; I quote list prices only. Detail in [Google Workspace alternatives](https://lotsmail.to/blog/google-workspace-alternatives-for-business-email).

Choose Google Workspace if your team works in Docs, Drive and Meet every day.

## 5. Microsoft 365: Outlook and Office

Business Basic is $7.00 a user a month billed yearly, or $8.40 on a monthly subscription. Choose it if your team or your clients live in Outlook and Office.

## 6. Migadu and Purelymail: flat price per account

Migadu charges per account rather than per mailbox: Micro $19 a year (5 GB, 20 outgoing messages a day), Mini $9 a month or $90 a year (30 GB, 100 a day), Standard $29 or $290 (100 GB, 500 a day) and Maxi $99 or $990 (500 GB, 2,000 a day), with unlimited addresses and limits shared across the account. Purelymail costs $10 a year with no hard limits on users, custom domains or storage; heavy use may need its resource-based pricing.

Choose either if you're comfortable setting up mail yourself and the lowest flat price matters most.

## What a team of 10 pays each month

Ten people on one domain, on each provider's entry plan with your own domain, yearly billing where offered (checked on 29 October 2026):

| Provider and plan | How it adds up | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| **LotsMail Starter** | 1 domain × $5 | **$5** |
| Zoho Mail Lite | 10 users × $1 | $10 |
| Fastmail Standard | 10 users × $5 | $50 |
| **Proton Mail Essentials** | 10 users × $6.99 | $69.90 |
| Google Workspace Business Starter | 10 users × $7 | $70 |
| Microsoft 365 Business Basic | 10 users × $7.00 | $70 |

Per-user prices rise with every person. Zoho Mail Lite stays closest, and costs less than LotsMail Starter below five people. Plans differ in storage and features, so read the table with the comparison above.

## Moving off Proton

Your domain doesn't belong to your email provider, so you can keep it. With LotsMail, you keep your DNS provider and website, add the records shown and point mail to LotsMail when ready.

Old mail needs a plan. LotsMail's Import mail connects over IMAP with an app password to Gmail, Google Workspace, Zoho, Yahoo or any IMAP host. Proton's own IMAP is a local server that its Bridge app creates on your computer, and its Export Tool saves emails as EML files, so I haven't listed Proton as an import source. Keep your Proton account until you've saved what you need, and don't cancel before your mail is pointed and checked. Importing from Microsoft 365 is not available.

## How to choose

- **Office apps and meetings with your email:** Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.

## FAQ

### What is the best alternative to Proton Mail for business email?

It depends on why you're leaving. For several people or role addresses on one domain, LotsMail charges one price per domain, $5 a month on Starter, with unlimited mailboxes. For a suite, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 start at $7 a user a month on yearly billing. For independent per-person email with calendar, Fastmail Standard is $5 a user billed yearly.

### Is there a cheaper alternative to Proton Mail for business?

Yes. Proton Mail Essentials is $6.99 a user a month billed yearly ($7.99 monthly). Zoho Mail Lite is from $1 a user billed yearly, Fastmail Standard is $5, and LotsMail Starter is $5 for the whole domain. Prices checked on 29 October 2026.

### Does LotsMail have end-to-end encryption like Proton Mail?

LotsMail's privacy policy doesn't describe end-to-end encryption. It says mail is encrypted in transit between its systems and encrypted at rest by its providers, is not sold or used to train AI models, and that message content is never written to its logs. If end-to-end encryption is your first requirement, Proton is built for it.

### Can I use Outlook or Apple Mail with LotsMail?

Not yet. Desktop and phone mail apps over IMAP and SMTP are coming soon. Today LotsMail works in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer, and through your AI assistant. Proton works with Outlook, Thunderbird and Apple Mail now.

### Can ChatGPT or Claude work in my business inbox?

Yes with LotsMail: connect ChatGPT, Claude or any MCP client and choose, for each mailbox, read and search, drafts or send. Sending is off until you turn it on. Fastmail and Zoho Mail also connect to AI agents.

### Can I keep my domain and old email when I leave Proton Mail?

You keep your domain. LotsMail's Import mail works with Gmail, Google Workspace, Zoho, Yahoo or any IMAP host using an app password; Proton offers IMAP through its local Bridge app and an EML export tool instead, so keep your Proton account until you've saved your old mail.
